LOCATION:
Capitol Hill radiates a heady sense of geo-political significance with a small town feel. You're just a few blocks away from the U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court, Senate and House Office Buildings, and the Library of Congress. In the midst of these national landmarks, Hill locals have instilled a sense of "neighborhood." It's easy to see why the area's residents cherish their brownstones and tree-lined streets. You'll be able to run most errands on foot, not to mention walking to a variety of restaurants and cafes around Pennsylvania and Massachusetts Avenues. You’ll also be near the 11 Smithsonian Museums along our National Mall including the Air and Space Museum, the National Gallery of Art, Sackler and Freer Galleries of African and Asian Art respectively, National Museum of American History, the National Portrait Gallery & American Art Gallery. The list goes on! While you’re enjoying the Capitol Hill area, don’t forget to also check out Eastern Market and Barracks Row. The lively destination is famous for its huge farmer’s market, its arts and crafts vendors’ markets, not to mention the cafes, coffeehouses, restaurants, and boutiques. Eastern Market is one mile away from the apartment (a 15-minute-walk or five minutes by Metrobus).
TRANSPORTATION:
Leave your car behind! Nearby Union Station is a transportation hub for the mid-Atlantic region. The station contains two train lines (AMTRAK and local MARC trains). Union Station is also home to Washington’s subway Metro Red Line, Metro and Circulator buses, tour operators, and rental cars and bikes. And in addition to plentiful Metrobus stops all along Capital Hill streets, Capital Bikeshare makes bike rental a breeze. Or if you do want to drive (for an hour-long outing, or a longer trip outside the city to Monticello or Gettysburg), consider registering online for Car2Go or Zipcar--flexible alternatives to traditional rental cars.
If you’re bringing a car, there is an off-street space for an additional fee, and some street parking available (without a visitor pass) evenings and weekends. Also, the garage at Union Station is two blocks away if you need parking during the week (between 10am and 6pm).
